Last night, I attended the soft opening of Caña Rum Bar in Downtown Los Angeles. Being that it is located in the old spot of The Doheny, it's official name is Caña Run Bar at the Doheny. The Doheny was a membership only bar and asked patrons a hefty annual fee... I heard around $2500 a year but don't quote me on that! Now Caña will also be a members-only club but for a much lower fee of just $20 a year. I was a little hesitant to pay such a fee, but after sampling their drinks I was sold. During the night, we spoke with Caña's General Manager, Joel Black, who explained to us that the $20 fee also included membership in the Caña Rum Society. The Rum Society will offer complimentary rum tastings and spirit education for its members.
As for Caña's cocktail menu, it contains a list of signature drinks starting at $10 and are served with some of the top rums available. We started with the Daisy de Santiago made with Flor de Cana 7 year old rum, lime sugar, yellow Chartreuse, and a splash of soda water. Perfection.

Caña also has a happy hour that runs weekdays from 6-8pm and offers both Traditional Mojitos and Traditional Daiquiris for only $6 (normally $10). I went with the Traditional Daiquiri made with Matusalem Platino rum, lime juice, and sugar and served in a saucer-shaped champagne glass. Now if neither of those drinks are what you are looking for, happy hour also includes $2 off any cocktail listed.

For my third drink (don't worry, I wasn't driving), I wanted to compared the different Daiquiris so I choose the Anejo Daiquiri made with Zaya 12 year old rum, lime juice, and sugar. This drink runs $12 but was $2 off for happy hour. Although both drinks were made perfectly and had just the right balance of tartness and sweetness, I actually preferred the Traditional Daiquiri.
Now the charm of Caña has to be its 1930's Caribbean style filled with mahogany furniture and antique chandeliers and lamps. It also offers an outdoor smoking patio with a fireplace. So if you are looking for amazing drinks in a wonderful setting, you will definitely find that at Caña Rum Bar.
