Desert Rose

This summer I had a goal of going to happy hours in areas that I don't get to very often. I didn't do the best job on that, but I did hit up Desert Rose in Los Feliz. I was really excited because I heard they had a beautiful patio and some great deals.  Two of my readers, Matt and George, had recommended I go because Desert Rose had a Cheeseburger for around $5. Woowee!! It all sounded good to me!

So I grabbed some girlfriends and went Desert Rose. To our surprise, the cheeseburger is no more. (Sorry, Matt and George. *sad face*) Oh well. The drink selection looked fabulous so I was over it quickly. They offered $3 pints of some really good beers, $5 wine, and $5-7 Specialty Cocktails.  I tried the Vanilla Mango Mojito, Agave Nectar Margarita, and the Iced Mocha Martini. My favorite was the Vanilla Mango Mojito. Very tasty! The Mocha Martini was also good but seemed more like dessert.

So we were happy with the drinks. The food?? Well, some things were good but others weren't prepared well and we didn't even finish them. Here's what we had:

Chicken Croquettes $5
They were good.

Calamari $5
They were completely undercooked. You could tell by just looking at the plate and we could taste the flour the second we bit into a piece. It sat on the table untouched.

Spicy Pita Pinwheels $3
Hummus, Olives, Tomatoes, and Lettuce wrapped in pita.
We each took one piece and wondered where the "spiciness" was. It was completely bland. After mentioning it to the waitress, she said "oops, looks like the forgot to add the spice."

A good price but for a Mediterranean restaurant I wasn't impressed.

Falafel Sliders $5
I did like these.

Garlic Parmesan Fries $3
These were very good.

Shrimp Cocktail $6
I didn't try it, but my friend said it was good.

Even though some things were good, we were kind of bummed because of the things that weren't. Maybe they were having an off day, but first impressions are important.

**If you do try Desert Rose's Happy Hour, be aware that their hours are different for the small plates compared to the drinks. Kinda weird. See below for times.
